The United States does not celebrate national holidays when all employees are granted a day off and most businesses are halted. There are only holidays observed by all of the US federal government employees, thus the holidays are called “US Federal Holidays”. Yet, many US companies and institutions also use the federal holidays to determine the days off for their employees.

There are 10 annual US Federal holidays and 1 quadrennial holiday (Inauguration Day). The annual holidays are observed by all states and local governments; yet, each state may add, subtract, or alter the date of holidays. Most state in the US also celebrate state holidays and local holidays to celebrate certain festivals or important events in the past.

Most US federal holidays except New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are celebrated on Monday. This is due to the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 which has been being applied since 1971. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, most retail businesses are closed. They remain open on the other holidays. There are six big holidays for private businesses in the US i.e. New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Some private businesses include Friday after Thanksgiving and more holidays on their annual holidays calendar.
