Victoria 2013 Public Holidays

Just like the other Australian states, Victoria observes its own public holidays. Public holidays in Victoria are legislated by Victorian Public Holidays Act 1993. Every year, Victoria observes at least 11 public holidays.

According to Victorian Public Holidays Act 1993, all employees of both private and public sectors are granted time off on public holidays without loss of pay. Employees covered by a federal award or agreement in Victoria will receive additional payment if they are required to work during public holidays.

Those who are not covered by a federal award or agreement may work on these public holidays, and their employers are not required to give additional payment. Yet, it is possible that these workers receive a penalty rate of payment based on negotiations with the employers.

Some holidays are considered as restricted public holidays in Victoria. During those days, businesses and shops are required to close except those who are granted exemptions.
