World Science Day for Peace and Development, also known as simply World Science Day, is an international event which highlights the international commitment to science for peace and development in the society. The event was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2001. Many communities around the world commemorate the event on 10 November every year.

Origin of World Science Day
The origin of the World Science Day dates back to the year 1999 when a World Conference on Science was held in Budapest. At the conference, it was agreed that a World Science Day annual recognition would be needed to bridge the gap between science and society. Following the conclusion at the conference, in 2001 UNESCO proclaimed an event called World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) on 10 November every year. The inaugural WSDPD was held on 10 November 2002, and the event is celebrated as an annual international commemoration every 10 November.

World Science Day for Peace and Development is not a public holiday, but it is a global observance which is celebrated in many institutions, campuses, and public venues around the world. The main purpose of World Science Day commemoration is to raise public awareness regarding the importance of science as well as to bridge the gap between science and society. On this day, many kinds of seminars, counselings, debates, and forums of discussions are held with the topic of science for the society.
